If you log in to ual.com mileage summary, it will tell you your current status. It does indeed take effect immediately on posting of the 50k mile (or 60th segment), no need to wait until Feb. If you do not requalify, you lose it in Feb 2006 (or drop down to 2P if you qual'ed for that), but an increase is immediate.
