They also need to clarify for those who are in a similar position (I am sure they will as things develop) how they are going to handle this situation as it may cause people to fly with different airlines for a period of time.
For example, currently my wife gains approx 400xp per year and is sitting at just under 700 with 5 years platinum. When its her turn for the changes to take effect in May 25, she will be sitting with approx 800xp. So as we understand things, at this point she will use 300 of these xp to extend her status by one year and be left with approx 500xp. If these are all carried over as is suggested, she only needs to gain 100xp in the following year as anymore will be lost (only allowed to carryover 300). She is not going to fly with KLM if she is not gaining status points so we would probably use BA for the duration to up our status with them.
Perhaps for people in a similar situation to my good lady Flying Blue should ask her (them) if they prefer their excess xp's to be all carried over or to convert 300xp out of the 500xp into an additional PFL years and only carry over 200xp (in my wifes case)?
The intent of AFKL here is clearly that someone in your wife's situation either:
* Steps it up next year and flies another 100/400/700 XP worth of revenue flights (or SAF purchases...) to get a bonus year towards PfL (and maybe ULTI?)
* Shifts to award tickets rather than money tickets
* Becomes effectively non-XP earning if they have no choice in flying AFKL/SkyTeam
* Shifts their flying to other airlines (given that at this point a Platinum flying AFKL in most revenue fare classes is likely basically zero if not negative margin)
