Has anyone ever tried merging 2 back to back reservations as a single stay, but in different room categories?

The intent is to apply a suite upgrade to the whole stay, but since the base room isn't available on every night of that stay, it makes more sense to make a booking for the base room for part of the stay, and then the lowest available room for the other part, merge them, and apply the cert.
