No, that is reading way too much into it.

This is just a programming change with how aa.com displays search results, one that someone thought was a good idea but didn't fully think through the side effects.

If you buy a ticket to Buffalo then AA will get you to Buffalo, or in the event of irrops any close city that you deem acceptable, not AA.
