Not to worry. On the small aircraft like CRJ900s they do distribute "delivery at the gate" tags. Before entering the plane, leave your bag by the stairs (or on a carriage), then you will get it back at the stairs before entering the terminal building. I would not ask to "gate check" since in Europe, it is often understood as "check your baggage in the hold" and you will need to claim it with the regular bags in the baggage claims area.
