AA basic economy vs main cabin: boarding group, bin space, changes
I notice that main cabin usually cost a little more than basic economy. I see there are no change fees assuming no difference in price but when is the latest you can cancel or change your American flight? Let's say you want to book a flight in about 10 days from now on November 10. If you book it on November 2, when can you still make a change? I heard it was something like no more than x days before departure but how many days? Now is it possible to cancel your flight and get a travel bank like Jetblue or not?
I see you can also choose your seat and you are on general boarding. Basic economy, there is no changes allowed and last group to board.
Does that mean it always make sense to pay that extra amount for main cabin vs basic economy for American? So not only you have the convenience of changing the flight, but you board earlier? However, does anyone know if basic economy in Americcan always board last? I have flown with American previously as I believe almost everytime I flew basic economy but maybe once or twice main cabin... but don't they sometimes call some groups of main cabin and basic economy last? Or with American, basic economy always is last to board? To me, this is important in case there might not be overhead bin space but is this not a concern usually when it's an international flight? I never had an issue with overhead bin space except having to put my carry on in another area and not above me and I know many people had to do this.
So there is basic economy, main cabin and business class for the flight. So if you book main cabin, you will pretty much get overhead bin space almost always? I recall that when they call people to board, it is people who are business class, and other people before they start calling in main cabin and basic economy. However, I recall they always would say main cabin row x come board, then the next row x come board. So it is luck of the draw in what group you are in with main cabin then? Such that it could be 6 groups but your group could be anywhere from the 1st to the 6th group to board in the main cabin?
Also, does anyone know typically how many seats sold are main cabin vs basic economy on a flight? Again, I almost always fly basic economy with american or delta and recall always being the last group to board but there was not an issue with overhead bin space which is my concern. Is there less concern of overhead bin space with delta or jetblue compared to american or vice versa? I ask this because my carry on messenger bag mainly has electronics inside it so I cannot check that in. I do have one checked luggage though.
It also makes sense to book a main cabin vs basic economy because besides changing your flight, well if there is any drop in price from now until you are going to fly... I believe it's within 2 days of departure... then you can cancel one and book another one right? But if the price at the moment you want to book is as low as it will ever get, well main cabin is still better because priority of boarding earlier than basic economy right?
