I am an AA Platinum Pro flying tomorrow SEA-EWR on a codeshare flight ticketed by AA and operated by AS. I booked the flight kinda last-minute so only standard aisle seats were available at time of booking and check-in. I checked in right at T-24 since AS sometimes uses check-in time as a tiebreaker for F upgrades.

A few hours later I glanced at the Alaska app and noticed that an aisle seat had opened up in Premium Class, so I tried to grab it right away. First the app told me I had to pay for the seat, then it just wouldn't change it at all. So I called Alaska, and they told me that because I am flying on an AA codeshare AND was already checked in for the flight, they simply could not move me to the seat, period. They also couldn't check me out and make the change that way, because it was an AA ticket. So I called AA, and they couldn't assign the seat or check me out either.

So basically because I booked the flight as a codeshare and not through Alaska directly, and had the audacity to check in at T-24, I got screwed out of a complimentary Premium Class seat. I don't recall seeing anything about this exception to the reciprocal AA/AS elite benefits anywhere. What a lousy customer experience that reflects poorly on both airlines. Can anything be done or should I just avoid AA codeshares on AS in the future?

Thanks,
Daniel
In general I would avoid codeshares (regardless of airlines) unless you have a very compelling reason not to. Issues like this seem to come up all the time.
