I did briefly try to figure this out before booking and didn’t see anything on it. So hope this helps someone out there!
I noticed the same thing, both with Amex and my Virgin Atlantic card (which should offer 3x points for direct spends with Virgin Atlantic). Even though the bid was listed as a payment to Virgin Atlantic, I received 1x points. I called Virgin who said "call your credit card company." After a long back and forth with Bank of America, their rep offered me the extra points after conceding that I had, indeed, spent the money directly with Virgin.
