Nothing forcing you to pick the outlying airports if you can't make the logistics work.
This is true however AA has definitely been playing with their programming at aa.com over the past 2 days with regards to the "include nearby airports" functionality of an award search.
Yesterday and today I've noticed aa.com is defaulting to select the "include nearby airports" for every award search. It didn't used to be like this AFAIK.
Also when searching awards in the app, the "include nearby airports" functionality is evidently turned on now
with no way to turn it off. For several searches yesterday in the app from RDU for example, at least half of the search results were from other airports scattered across NC.
Both of these are extremely annoying bugs, as at aa.com you have to manually uncheck the boxes for every search you do, and in the app the search results are now limiting relevant results in favor of other airports you may or may not want to see.
