Not all ridiculous. Quite the opposite, more flexibility in IROPs is always a good things. Being able to have more flight options through the app/website instead of having to call is a good thing.

Nothing forcing you to pick the outlying airports if you can't make the logistics work.

I and/or family members have been bailed out of IROPs a few times this year on both UA and AA by this wide definition of alternate airports.
