Flight credit and trip credit are different. In this case it was Dfw - Akl. They told me I should have called before I cancelled but it was 1/2 hr from Checkin and I had a family emergency . I would suggest dealing with whatever you have to deal with, and then send customer service a note through the web form. They are the only ones empowered to make exceptions and IME they are extremely fair.
