Another strategy (if viable) could be to change instead of cancel. I think even if you go back on the waitlist, there is no fee to change. I suppose if it doesn't clear on the new flight, you dont get the co-pay back.
Aren't flight credits essentially cancelled tickets with unused funds (and possibly other things like upgrade certs still attached)? ie, a new name, but not a new concept. There is a taxes and fees section of a flight credit; I'm not sure if the copay would go into the fees or just disappear.
This is different from a trip credit which is a different document type.
