Have done this several times this year on separate tickets + even an award ticket from LAX>AKL.

Twice I’ve had issues with them struggling to find my NZ flight (spent 30 minutes at Premier Access check in desk) - the UA agent both times was trying to search LAX>NZL flights rather than LAX>AKL for some reason but all sorted eventually and now know to tell them the airport codes!
