a few years ago when i was on a project in Dubai, i was told upon checkin at DXB twice that i was lucky to have checked in online as they downguaged/cancelled an earlier service and there will be others in first who will be downgraded.

i never thought much of it but it was the comment about me checking in online that has stuck with me since and was curious if it was true or just misinformed.
