Not checking in (and therefore no BP) until as late as you can does give you the benefit of being able to select a different seat if one better than yours comes up due to a cancellation or mis-connect etc.

I usually select my seat in advance (status allows me to do this) but when check-in opens at T-24 I ignore it until about T-3, sometimes even as late as the airport.
