Happy to help.

It's quite common not to see anything past P, to the chagrin of people with upgrade instruments or who are looking for award travel.

Out of the ones you've listed, then, those two are likely to have the lowest upgrade costs, although I agree 100% with the poster who suggested to try SFO in preference to either of those (edit:
cesco.g points out that it's a seasonal flight, so it may not be an option for your dates).

Yes, there are reports of upgrade offers in that range. Of course, there are guarantees, but it's plausible.

Cash upgrades on UA are sold on a segment-by-segment basis. You can upgrade either, or both, of your connecting flights as you see fit.

It's not about the effect it would have on my upgrade clearance rate -- honestly, by the time somebody gets to the gate, they've turned down so many UA upgrade offers that I don't know that one more will move the needle. It's just that I want the gate agents to concentrate on helping people -- tagging strollers and wheelchairs, looking up connecting flight information, etc. -- rather than attempting a sales pitch. The on-board credit card solicitations are already tacky enough -- this is just one more log on that fire. Let me enjoy my trip without trying to sell me anything.
