I have stayed here a few times and I usually do the train at least one way. I hate the SoCal traffic and the train station is about two blocks from the hotel, it couldn’t be easier. I’m normally going for the beach so don’t find I need the car for much, plus I’m a big walker. There’s also an Avis/Budget around 1.5 miles away that I’ve used when I end up needing a car.
With that said, if you’ve never been before it may be helpful to have a car. The towns south (Carlsbad, Encinitas, etc) are very pleasant and a short drive. But there’s always Uber. I think either would work.
Train > driving, always always. Get a car in town, or dont get one at all. Use a bike, car service, or, once you get up to Oside, you can use a pretty cool service locally (also in downtown San Diego) called Circuit, which is a 6-8 seater electric cart which you can access with an app, and will pick you up and take you anywhere in OSD city limits West of the 5, which includes downtown & beaches. Is like $3, and then anywhere outside of that radius, you could Uber/Lyft/whatever
