Maybe it's regional, but there are jurisdictions where scanning ID barcodes is a good defense against overzealous enforcement of liquor laws — if the chain operates in one of those areas that might be the reason for the policy. (I've seen at least one mention of insurance discounts for bars and restaurants with ID scanners, as well.)
Yes, it appeared to be just the barcode. My county (monopolized) liquor stores do not scan nor do the stores in DC (IME). If the cashier can't explain the reason beyond 'HQ requires it', I'm not interested. And this is going way off topic, but timely. I was in at a state office yesterday. FedEx brought in two packages and the FedEx rep had the scanner that recorded the package's barcodes, but also required an identification scan. The state employee provided her state ID card, FedEx driver said it must scan her driver's license, which she gladly provided without question. Not me. If my employer's ID does not work for an employer-related delivery, then I'm refusing the delivery. And again, OT, I stopped at the Xfinity storefront a few months ago to inquire about switching from FIOS. The first thing the rep wanted to do was to scan my driver's license 'to ensure that he could get me the best deal'.
