Actually, it could be related to Global Entry as part of the development, testing, and deployment of facial recognition technology, including for reporting exits to CBP.
Last week my United Airlines (UA) international direct flight from Guam, USA (GUM) to Koror, Palau (ROR) and Manila, Philippines (MNL) used this facial recognition boarding method -- double checked by a gate agent (GA) glancing at our passports -- rather than scanning boarding passes.
