Depends on where in Europe. A bunch of my European hotel stays this year haven’t involved me presenting photo ID at check-in. But there are some places that are more inconsistent than others; some places where they consistently want to see it but don’t necessarily want to handle it; some places where they want to see mine and want it in their hand often or even always. For quite some time now, I prefer to try to use my US Passport Card for ID at check-in when European hotels ask me for ID or passport.
The more often you have to pull an ID out of a holder and put it back in, the more wear and tear the holder is usually going to get. Enough wear and tear, and the ID will have higher chances of falling out. FWIW, I like keeping DLs and other card IDs in a holder when showing them even if I hand over the holder because it reduces the likelihood of the ID falling into a crevice or other space while the check-in agents are checking an ID. If a Marriott property is not legally required to photocopy/photograph/photo-scan the ID, I would prefer they accept a flash of the ID in its holder or without holding it . But as with many things in life, travelers are better off staying calm and not getting annoyed in such a way as to make an annoying person annoyed enough to cause more problems — not that it’s a guarantee to work.
