I typically show the ID through the wallet window, and if the clerk wants to see if more closely, I take it out. It is just "easier" not to take it out but in a degree of difficulty, it is a 0.05 on a scale of 10. And as a gentle reminder to the OP, different people of different ages require different distances in which to read the typeset on an ID. I'd much rather have a clerk handle the card than my entire wallet.
