Are you guys under the impression that a hotel desk clerk can identify fake IDs? This is a prime example of security theater and nothing else. I personally have never removed my DL from my wallet at a US hotel, because I don't recall ever being asked.

OP, California properties are always on a different planet than the rest of the US. I've had more incidents of bad hotel employees in CA Marriott properties than probably the rest of the world combined.
