One note of caution - not sure where you're going in Europe, but I had some trouble with ATMs in France. First, at the CDG airport, especially in terminal 2A and 2C, there are only a few ATMs and they run out of cash quickly. A lot of US flights land there within just a few hours of each other. All these folks raid the ATMs and if your flight isn't the early one you risk not having access to cash. There is an AMEX exchange counter, but beware - they often can't do credit card advances and they, of course, charge huge fees and give crummy exchange rates when changing US dollars. This was my only option, and left me with just barely enough cash to get a taxi to my hotel; I would have been stranded recently.
The other problem I had in France was a tough time finding an ATM that accepted my Amex card, which I use for cash when on company business. Don't know if that will translate to difficulty using your ATM card, but a word of caution nonetheless.
You'd think that a place like CDG and a city like Paris would be totally simple for using ATMs to get Euros. But I've had problems there, in Brazil (at GRU and elsewhere) and in China. I had absolutely no problems in Manchester, Hong Kong, Macau, and New Zealand. Go figure.
