I wonder why they don't just let the client drive to the drop off point and then they drive back. Sheez. Slow as a snail springs to mind!
Agreed regarding the returns being sloppy (at best) since they "temporarily suspended it" during COVID. Some locations still refuse to do drop-offs regularly (I'm looking at you DFW). Regarding the drivers:
  • Once you've checked the car back in, you're not an authorized driver on the car. So they can't let you drive the vehicle back to the terminal.
  • If the car is still checked-out to you and you drive to the terminal, their employee cannot drive it back to the lot under your contract since they are not an authorized user on your contract.
So the only options are: They drive the car with you back to the terminal. Or, they let you drive to the terminal but then process the return before they drive the car back. I think that's too much hassle, (many times the person driving me back isn't someone that handles returns, but another employee on the lot), potential for error (if the charge isn't right - for fuel or something else, it's hard for you to get it straight when you're standing at the terminal, off-site), etc.
