It would be unusual to inform someone they had been bumped off a flight without detailing a rebooking/process. And even more so to still expect them to turn up at the airport for the original flight.
They called me 6 hours before the flight and said it was oversold and my options were downgrade or fly tomorrow. I pushed back and was like, why am I being selected. It wasn't said outright, but implied given I was on an AA award J booking on QR, I was at the bottom of the totem pole despite being OWE. Additionally, there were 2 passengers.
I searched quickly and proposed getting moved to DFW-DOH, MIA-DOH or being rerouted via LHR in J. They told me they are still seeking volunteers and to come to the check in later if I wanted to travel.
got to the airport, had a long chat with the agents and supervisor. discussed the same options. Given the award booking situation, I ended up volunteering to take the BA LHR flight (plus comp)
IF there were no seats available. Went to the lounge and then the gate, where they paged me and handed us our original boarding pages.
I guess they found someone to take a downgrade or didn't connect. While BA J with $ Comp would have been a reasonable outcome, I've been trying to fly on the a351 for 5 years, wanted to not leave another flight to chance later and mainly wanted to have my SO experience QR for the first time.
Not sure if this helps, I don't know exactly what happened to have it work out. I suspect they got volunteers or found passengers to bump that cost them less overall.
