On policy grounds it's a no, as you surmise there are no involuntary options for time changes under 2 hours. However check what has happened to flight numbers, if they have changed rather than just re-timed then you have a stronger argument if you can say your original flight was cancelled. Also note that AA will traditionally flex changes, in either direction. If this is over Christmas then there is plenty of scope for AA to move in either direction.
