I can confirm for Executive. When ITA website works, seat selection is possible from time of booking.

EC261 would come in play, so I'd say yes. I would make sure to have travel insurance anyway for cases like these. .

Not a chance, IMHO.
My status expires too, I'm waiting to see how long it will take for LH to take over and the program to be moved to star alliance.
In the meantime I'm not sure it's less expensive to earn status in SkyTeam (Maintain Executive on Volare was not a viable option) or just book in business when I need ITA going to/from Italy (short haul only).
