I check-in on the app, but don't scan my passport.
I go to the airport and scan my passport to retrieve boarding pass. Never had an issue. I mean, if you are involved in an accident, and cannot travel, sure. In those scenarios, I would think there may be more pressing matters than getting on a flight.
Under normal circumstance, your seat would NOT be just "given away".

Most fares you would get the pick seats at booking. And OP is in business.
