W was established by Starwood as a Lifestyle brand, not a Luxury brand. Marriott repositioned it as a Luxury brand. There are significant differences between older and newer W properties. Some of the older W properties were removed from the brand as they cannot be positioned as Luxury. W New York (the original one) and W Suite Silicone Valley (rebranded as Aloft) come to mind.
