My understanding is that if you book a cash fare bucket and reduce the cash element paid with some avios, you are still travelling on the cash fare bucket and will earn accordingly.
If you book an avios fare and reduce the amount of avios paid with some cash, you are still travelling on a redemption and will not earn anything.
