I’ve only done it either two or three times.

But at least on one of those occasions Qantas (this was just before Sep 2016 separate PNR check through abolition for QF) I was given boarding passes as well as bag tags for separate PNR CX QF- no checking of luggage separate itineraries from 1 Sep [2016 some exceptions]
