I've held overlapping bookings in the past, and the only time I got an email from RM was to tell me to cancel the reservation I wasn't going to take before they cancelled one of them arbitrarily. This happened because I took AS proactive-change credit and ended up with two SFO-LAX bookings on the same flight on the same day. As far as I know they don't check overlapping bookings on different flights.
