It isn't useless. SQ allows you to check in 48 hours before the flight's departure but only provides the BP sometime under 24 hours prior to departure. If you have not received the BP within 4 hours of the flight's departure that's a completely different issue than expecting to receive it more than 24 hours prior to the flight's departure.
Still does not explain why the need to have a paper boarding pass, given that it was an online check in...
