I had to send the article to my dad, who flew the 720B and 727 for United. He said it was exactly right - the "eyebrow" windows were for additional visual support, primarily when turning, and they were especially useful when turning into a "tight final".

They were never used for sextant navigation - said the last airplane United pilots were trained to use the sextant in (as backup) was the DC-6!.
