From my perspective it all depends on the location, I had a chance to visit a few hostels in South East Asia and the standard was relatively high, i could filter out 'bad' hostels for my based on pictures and reviews. However based on that experience i tried hostel in London and it was completely different story, the pictures were pretty good, however in reality i gained such an experience that i would prefer to skip hostels for the rest of my life
