A lot here depends on whether you're connecting or not. 10 days ago I had a 90 minute connection. The immigration side was easy - straight through the Global Entry kiosks (I beat Matt Smith of Doctor Who fame to them, of which I'm immensely proud) which although small in quantity do have reliable facial recognition which speeds throughput considerably, less than a minute at the desk for the passport check ... and then the issues started.
My and MrsNWI's passenger information had become mangled such that our DOBs had been switched, preventing us getting our TSAPre numbers recognised. We lost a few minutes at an AA Flagship desk while they figured it out. The Pre line was then a good 10 minutes, although this was mercifully short compared to the queue at the normal line. Our onward gate was through the tunnel. We managed to spend 10 minutes in the Soho lounge to grab a drink and got to our next gate just as they were boarding Group 2.
Without GE and TSAPre I seriously doubt we'd have made it.
Just over a week before that on an earlier arrival, we sailed through in well under 30 minutes, so the experience is certainly variable.
If NYC is your final destination you likely won't see much delay. If it's not, be prepared to move quickly when you have the opportunity to do so.
