Though we've now put in a claim and BA have told us it was due to 'damage to the aircraft' and so we aren't due any compensation. It would be good to see if anyone on here has any extra information. Thank you.

I suspect you’ll have a very strong case here, since it’s up to BA to provide replacement aircraft at one of their hubs.
There is a comprehensive UK 261 thread on this forum, we’ll worth a read.
Just to back up what zanderblue has said, don’t be put off and proceed to CEDR. BA seem to have a renewed interest in defending DAMY and DAMN claims now as it has become apparent they’ll be having a growing number of them. Another poster here has submitted a pithy retort be BA to CEDR over a claim that BA also denied due to damage. It won’t get BA very far but they just hope to put off claimants. Continue to see it through, the greater the weight of numbers, the more keenly the CAA will take interest in BA’s
obfuscation such as they did with Wizzair. Sadly with BA it is the only way to drive a change in attitude, both externally and internally.
So do crack on and once successful, do be minded to write in and complain to the CAA about BA’s contemptuous attitude to the regulation.
