This happens for us occasionally on flights to / from Tokyo from NYC. Same things from NYC to BAH -- but it's not always that way... When flights get closer in the pricing of two one ways in general gets closer to the RT price (typically because the RT price goes up as the plane fills up - but not always). For example -- I've been watching the RT price for flights from NYV to TYO for Nov 1 - 21 for a few months now. As of today the RT price is about $11k -- while two one ways is a little over $12k now -- and the gap is closing...
Bottom line is that it's something to keep an eye on - especially for expensive tickets....
