Without going on too much of a technical diversion - your underlying info is correct in that Apple does not allow direct access to the NFC chip. Access must be via Apple’s Core NFC Framework. Therefore, NFC on iOS can only perform functions that Core NFC Framework supports.

Support for reading of data from passport and ID cards via NFC was added to Core NFC Framework in late 2019. So apps like BA’s are now able to include this functionality on iOS.

Before that date, unlike Android, it was not possible on iOS.
