Look at this way. EC(UK)261 is very much on the side of the passenger. As you said in your opening post, your inconvenience was because AC cancelled your flight at less than a week's notice and made you depart many hours earlier. At that point, your arrival time was immaterial .
That is certainly true. I had arrived in EDI (from YYZ) June 5th, after an overnight flight, spent the entire day in meetings with an evening meal, then needed to sleep. But I had to leave for the airport about 3am! I would have loved if the replacement flight got me to my destination 3 hrs late instead of departing 3 hrs early.
