Partner airlines are under no obligation to keep their award space that AA has held. Considering that awards all have free cancellation with full refunds, I would suggest just booking rather than holding partner awards. It's a few extra clicks in the booking flow but it saves things like this from happening. Obviously that doesn't help you now though.

You can certainly call AA (I would) but expect to be disappointed.

I thought it was 7 days (but it started on a different time zone), so maybe it was 5 days, In any case, I'm positive it was supposed to last another 2 days (I have the email).

I agree that one can book and then cancel if necessary. Unfortunately, AA refunds of mileage on partner airlines can take a while to arrive, and sometimes requires calling them so I prefer to use holds if possible. Lesson learned, though.

What surprises me is the lack of notification, but then AA normally doesn't send out notifications if you let a hold expire too.
