It might take them out of the upgrade pool but as a Gold you're not talking about a huge upgrade anyway.

Same last name usually isn't an issue....I've had my wife check-in lots of stays with the same credit card in my file with Marriott. But in HK I would not assume this will work.

+1. There are a few times where my wife checked in before me for an award stay or FNA for a domestic stay. We have the same last name and use the same credit card and had no issues. I have also done this a few times with IHG. I wouldn't attempt this outside of the USA. Too much risk for my taste. YMMV....
