Is there a specific reason for the individual bag weight limit for carry-ons? I understand the overall limit and the limit for checked bags, but why do they care if I have one 10kg bag vs two 5 kg bags?
I don’t know the answer but perhaps it has something to do with the limits of what the overhead lockers can hold. Limiting each bag to 8kg means that you can only get 24kg in each locker (for example) - if there was no limit you might end up with 75kg in each locker (unlikely - I know!).
I’ve flown J with TK quite a lot and I’ve never had my carry-on luggage weight checked - Im guessing certain employees / airports are more picky than others and it’s just luck whether it is checked or not. If the agent in Paris was so determined to go exactly by the rules they could have informed you that you could put 2kg in another bag and carry everything on. That is what someone committed to providing excellent customer service on a premium airline would do. Evidently that commitment escaped that employee in Paris.
I would complain to TK if you haven’t already. It might not change anything but I’m sure if TK got enough complaints about a particular airport they would start to look at it more closely.
