I have had agents "force" it. But the policy is well documented on this thread is that with AF/KL the space must be married. I had one trip in the summer where they made it work with point to point availability. But officially it needs to be married. I tried last month with 3 different agents on a trip that only have point to point and all stated with AFKL it must always be married (as documented before). YMMV.
It must be married onky if upgrading all segments. This us why you upgrade just one segment even though yiu know both can be. By doing this the system then goes segment by segment. (Which is technically the correct method, it's just a matter of system acts like it is a actual sale and tries to confirm as the whole o/d if try to upgrade all segments at once)
