Correct. In cases where the round-trip is less expensive than the one-way, you would not be able to get anything refunded at all, unless there was some sort of schedule change or IRROPS with your return flight.
Note that credit from a partially-used ticket can be tricky whether it’s refundable or not. There may be significant restrictions on how it can be used. If you’re buying a roundtrip flight from the US to Europe and you cancel the return, that canceled segment may be limited to the original travel cities, or you may be able to change cities in Europe but you may have to return to your origin city, etc.
