Someone will correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe the cancelation fee would come into play in either scenario for a partially-used ticket. UA has filed quite a few fares with a cancellation fee but no change fee, which is why it matters.
so this wouldn’t work for buying a round trip to Europe because it’s cheaper when I only need a one way. Since you say when cancelling the return they will price it as a one way which will be more expensive. In this case it will be better to keep this credit and use it to go back to Europe when I need it.
