It depends upon your fare rules and what you actually ask UA to do.

In most cases, you can leave the credit with UA and pay the change fee, if any, when you apply it to a replacement flight. Any fare difference at that point would be refunded.

Alternatively, you can ask for a refund, in which case UA will reprice the ticket as a one-way, apply the change fee, if any, and refund the rest.

Someone will correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe the cancelation fee would come into play in either scenario for a partially-used ticket. UA has filed quite a few fares with a cancellation fee but no change fee, which is why it matters.
