Wasn't their opex lower than Southwest's? Didn't AA have other MD80s they could use between BOS and DCA? I simply fail to unstained why they abandoned such a seemingly nice plan after throwing so much money at the wall. Surely, they knew that a West Coast hub had long term value, WN would raise fares, and the Si Valley isn't going to die, right?
