I don't use the tags for day-to-day travel. And I try my best not to check bags. (In general I don't understand the need to tag your backpack which presumably never really leaves your side while traveling). But on the two most recent occasions where it couldn't be helped, I attached a gold tag as it seemed a convenient to mark my luggage and help in case of lost baggage. In neither case did the tags survive the trip.
In contrast, I still have a 1999 vintage Swissair Qualiflyer tag that has a metal wire instead of that crappy bit of faux leather. It's made countless trips without issue. Even has my parents' phone number which still works too.
