OP is in SFO. Is there a AA nonstop SFO SNA?

OP: the surest way is to buy the ticket outright.
Does it have to be a lie flat on AA?
For a day flight I'm perfectly happy with an old school recliner.
Alaska comes to mind. Priced much lower than AA.

I agree with the above about being flexible.
Also , unless you buy straight into J, there is a very likely chance that the other options simply will NOT be available and you will end up in economy.

Personally I would play it by ears and buy Y for the most part (MCE seat) and only buy business when I really want it. Then I would upgrade for cash when offered if at a good price.
Relying on miles upgrades , aawards, or elite upgrades would probably not be part of my strategy. Just a lucky day if they happen.
